The problem is the complete lack of transparency – restaurants can and do employ whatever practice they see fit, within the law. That’s why some places will add on an automatic extra service charge for large groups and others don’t have a service charge at all, but leave it to customers to tip in cash. The current move to close the wages loophole is a start but the government really should be looking at developing a framework that will level the playing field for all restaurants and keep the whole service charge issue transparent and fair.

I never add the ‘optional’ amount to my bill. If the service has been good I leave a cash tip. I’m also quick to complain if the service is not good. One thing I disagree with is the automatic 10% charge if a party has 8 or more people that many restaurants adopt.
